YA Graphic Novel Series

We have recently added some new series to our young adult graphic novel collection! Here are a few that we're excited about.

Berrybrook Middle School by Svetlana Chmakova

Each book in this series follows a diverse cast of characters who are all students in Berrybrook Middle School. Awkward and Brave are currently out. The third installment, Crush, is due out in 2018!

Black Panther by Ta-Nehisi Coates

Black Panther was the first black superhero to appear in mainstream comics in the 1960s. Celebrated writer Ta-Nehisis Coates has teamed up with illustrator Brian Stelfreeze to bring this superhero and his world to modern audiences. We have the first two volumes of the series at our library and more will be coming!

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations by Ukyo Kodachi

This Japanese manga series was originally published in Weekly Shonen Jump. The series is a spin-off of Masahi Kishimoto's Naruto. It follows the orignial character Natuto Uzumaki's son, Boruto and his ninja team. Right now, we have the first three volumes available for checkout. You can also borrow the anime movie as well!

Lumberjanes by Noelle Stevenson

This series first debuted in 2015. It follows a group of friends at summer camp and and all of the weird, supernatural creatures they encounter. We have the first four volumes for check out now and will be adding more! You can also check out the entire series as eBooks with Hoopla.

The Backstagers by James Tynion IV  

Jory transfers to an all boys high school and has trouble fitting in. He joins stage crew and discovers a magical world behind the stage. We currently have the first two volumes available for check out.

A fantastic guide for beginners with recommendations on everything from tools and equipment to how to store your delicious loaves! Plus, many different bread recipes with photographs showing each step along the way.

100 Great Breads by Paul Hollywood

Fans of the Great British Bake Off will enjoy trying out some of Paul Hollywood's favorite recipes. Includes recipes, technical advice, and a historical look at bread. If you need more GBBO in your life, you can also stream Mary Berry's Bread on Hoopla.

One Dough, Ten Breads by Sarah Black

Great photographs accompany recipes that will take you from beginner loaves to more adventurous combinations of flavors and techniques.

Wild Bread: Sourdough Reinvented by MaryJane Butters

A 2018 release by the creator of MaryJanesFarm magazine that aims to reinvent the idea of naturally fermented sourdough by making it easier to do in your own home and providing a wider range of versatile recipes.

Author Spotlight: Peter H. Reynolds

At tomorrow's Book Buddies we are reading Ish by Peter H. Reynolds. Book Buddies is a book club for kids in Kindergarten - Grade 2 where we read together and do fun activities based on the book. This month is all about art and creativity!

Peter Hamilton Reynolds is a Canadian artist who has illustrated and written many books for kids. His "Creatrilogy" - The Dot, Ish, and Sky Color - focus on creativity, learning, and self-expression. On his website, Peter talks about being inspired by his 7th grade teacher to draw and tell stories. He says, "My journey has been dedicated to helping kids, especially the "off the path" kids. I was one of them myself. Not every student is lucky enough to have a teacher, or adult, see his or her potential. When I visit students in schools they ask me what my hobbies are. I say thinking, dreaming. If my art and stories can help inspire others to do the same, I'll feel my life had meaning."

Construction Books for Young Children

This April we officially broke ground on our library expansion project. We have been excitedly watching our crew working as they build our 8,000 sqft addition. It's been fun to see so many young children in our community watching the big machines and construction site when they visit the library. So, in the spirit of our big construction project, here is a list of some great construction books for young children so that you can bring the joy of big machines home from the library!

The Digger and the Flower by Joseph Kuefler
This new book is brilliantly illustrated in monochromatic gray with pops of meaningful color. Kids will love the big machines and the emotional story. The  themes of environmentalism and conversation are introduced in a very child friendly way.

Little Excavator by Anna Dewdney
This book, by the beloved author of the Llama Llama books, tells the story of Little E. Little E is a small excavator who wants to help the big machines work as they build a park. Dewdney's well known charm shines through this sweet story.

Tip Tip Dig Dig and Tap Tap Bang Bang by Emma Garcia
Emma Garcia has many wonderful, brightly illustrated books for kids including these two titles that feature tools, trucks, and construction. Her rhythmic text makes these a lot of fun to read aloug.

Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site and Mighty, Mighty Construction Site by Sherri Duskey Rinker
One by one the machines power down and turn in for the night. Kids will love learning the names of each machine and the kind of work they do.

Construction and Construyendo by Sally Sutton
This board book, available in both English and Spanish, is a great introduction to custruction vehicles for very young children. The machines work together to build a library!

Hush Little Digger by Ellen Olson-Brown
A charming rendition of the popular lullaby, hush little baby. In this book a dad sings his son to sleep assuring him that he is better than a dump truck, a backhoe, and all of the other big machines.
