Recommended by the Bookaholics

At our very first Bookaholics gathering, one of the attendees suggested that it would be a fun idea to have a display at the Library full of books "Recommended by the Bookaholics." We swapped some recent titles with each other that we really enjoyed and chatted about them a bit. The display will be coming in September, but it seemed like a good idea for a blog post too. Some of the highly praised books are listed below. Have you read any of them yet? You can place a hold on any of the titles by clicking the links or you can wait to grab them from the book display in September!

Queen Bee by Dorothea Benton Frank
The Personal Librarian by Marie Benedict
Love Lettering by Kate Clayborn
The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles
The Girl in His Shadow by Audrey Blake
Last Flight by Julie Clark
Sisterland by Curtis Sittenfeld
The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow
A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles

If You Loved Stranger Things...

By now, if you're a Stranger Things fan, you've probably devoured both volumes of season 4 with the speed of a demogorgon and now you're left craving more. There's just something about that whole spooky 80s vibe with the music, fashion, hair, monsters, and heroes with hearts of gold that's a lot of nostalgic fun. Unfortunately, we will have to wait practically forever (1-2 years) for the next (and final) season. So, while you patiently wait to find out what happens next with the Stranger Things kids in Hawkins, you can make your way through some of the movies below. Maybe you've never seen them before. Maybe you're re-watching them and they just hit you differently at this point in your life. If your kids are old enough to watch Stranger Things, they might have fun viewing some of these vintage flicks with you too!

EFPL is Fine Free!

As you may have already heard, Eager Free Public Library is officially fine free! Fines on our materials had been suspended throughout the pandemic and at their June meeting, the Library Board decided to make this permanent. This a fast growing trend in the modern library world and we are glad to be a part of it! If you have any questions regarding this change, please feel free to ask us.

While this is exciting news, there are a few things you should know:
  • This applies to Eager Free Public Library owned materials. Not all libraries in our system are fine free. Items received from other SHARE member libraries or through Interlibrary Loan may trigger an overdue fine. (Maximum overdue charge per item is $5.00)
  • Patrons are still responsible for any fees billed to their account due to damaged or lost library materials.

Author Spotlight: Matt Haig

Our Bookaholics book club will be gathering at Ceili Coffee & Wine Bar on Wednesday, July 20 at 6:30pm to chat about The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. We have plenty of copies available at the Library, so grab one the next time you visit us! There have been mixed reviews coming in so far, so it should make for an interesting discussion. This is a laid back book club where everyone is welcome; whether you liked or disliked the book, didn't even finish it, or just want to hang out with some other cool book loving people. We hope you can join us!

Matt Haig has written all kind of books for children and young adults, as well as fiction and nonfiction for adults. Below you will find some of his other books geared towards adults.

Fiction
How to Stop Time “She smiled a soft, troubled smile and I felt the whole world slipping away, and I wanted to slip with it, to go wherever she was going… I had existed whole years without her, but that was all it had been. An existence. A book with no words.”

The Humans "When an extra-terrestrial visitor arrives on Earth, his first impressions of the human species are less than positive. Taking the form of Professor Andrew Martin, a prominent mathematician at Cambridge University, the visitor is eager to complete the gruesome task assigned him and hurry home to his own utopian planet, where everyone is omniscient and immortal."

The Dead Fathers Club "Philip Noble is an eleven-year-old in crisis. His pub landlord father has died in a road accident, and his mother is succumbing to the greasy charms of her dead husband's brother, Uncle Alan. The remaining certainties of Philip's life crumble away when his father's ghost appears in the pub and declares Uncle Alan murdered him."

Nonfiction
The Comfort Book “It is a strange paradox, that many of the clearest, most comforting life lessons are learnt while we are at our lowest. But then we never think about food more than when we are hungry and we never think about life rafts more than when we are thrown overboard.”

Notes on a Nervous Planet "The world is messing with our minds. What if there was something we could do about it?"
