Author Spotlight: Kevin Henkes

Kevin Henkes is a Wisconsin native who currently lives in Madison, Wisconsin. He has had a remarkable career as an author and illustrator of children's picture books and novels. His book Chrysanthemum is one of my all time favorites that I have enjoyed since a was a child.

Most recently, his book Waiting was named a Caldecott Honor Book for its outstanding illustrations and a Geisel Honor Book which recognizes the most distinguished books for beginner readers. Waiting is the sweet story of a group of toys patiently waiting for something to happen. They find joy and peace in their quiet state.

Kevin Henkes has won several other awards in his career including the Caldecott Medal for Kitten's First Full Moon in 2004. This book tells the adorable story of a young kitten who mistakes the full moon in the sky for a full bowl of milk.

Two of his novels have also been recognized as Newbery Medal Honor Books. Olive's Ocean was named an honor book in 2004, and The Year of Billy Miller was named in 2014.
