FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON

Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes follows Charlie on his journey to becoming a genius.  When we first meet Charlie we learn that he was born with a well-below average IQ, and he has the opportunity to become a genius.  He is only slightly aware of what will happen to him, but he does understand that knowledge, reading, and writing are important.  Charlie's journey parallels that of Algernon, the mouse who was part of a similar experiment.

Daniel Keyes' novel was turned into the movie Charly in 1968 which won an Oscar for Best Actor (Cliff Robertson).
